South Carolina's jobless rate elevated to 8.7% in January.

Up one-tenth of a percentage point from an adjusted 8.6% in December -- it was originally 8.4% -- over 188,000 South Carolina residents found themselves without a job in January. Since January 2012, however, employment has increased by more than 26,000 workers.

Unemployment this January in Charleston embodied a similar trend, rising two-tenths of a point to 7.3% as opposed to the 7.1% of residents without jobs in December.

Here are the breakdowns from local counties:

  • Berkeley County rose from 7.5% to 7.7%;
  • Charleston County rose from 6.8% to 7.2%; and
  • Dorchester County rose from 7.0% to 7.2%.
