Charleston has been ranked one of the "Top 10 Downtowns," No. 2 "Best Spring Break Cities," the No. 1 "Best City for Historic Preservation" lists, and, heck, the No. 1 city in the world.
It's enough to, apparently, make one want to drink.
The Daily Beast placed Charleston as No. 4 in its list of the "Drunkest Cities" — that's just beneath Milwaukee and just above Austin.
We earned our spot by the average adult drinking 15.3 beverages per month, 17.3% considered as binge drinkers, and 8.7% being labeled heavy drinkers.
Not too shabby — last year we placed a poor 12th.
So, Charleston, cheers!
As for how exactly these cities were ranked, The Daily Beast elaborates: "The Daily Beast first reached out to market researcher Experian Marketing Services for recent data on the average number of alcoholic drinks per month per adult, in each metro area. As well, we pulled data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the percentage of residents who are binge drinkers and heavy drinkers. For the final ranking, the average drinks per month rank was weighted 50 percent; the binge-drinking and the heavy-drinking population for each metro area each got a 25 percent weighting."
Coming in No. 1 was Boston.
